Recent proliferation of comments which in my opinion is exceptionally positive made us to think of two comment boxes instead of one, two independent spaces for two types of discussions. We have also received many emails complaining that completely relevant discussions / questions are buried under marginal notes and making contribution v. difficult; so we decided to use two comment boxes for each post (using MT and haloscan). Henceforth, the MT comment box (On-topic) is merely used for ‘completely’ relevant discussions or pertinent questions to the topics discussed in the post or creative contributions which ‘use the topic’ as a groundwork to diverge it in all directions (we have seen such creative examples from Tachi, Thistle, Craig and Robin in posts like Pipeline Odyssey, Machines are digging, etc.)
The second comment box, Tangents, is free for any marginal topic, nummification or chat.
The first comment box -- On-topic -- will be slightly moderated, nothing will be deleted as usual (except in the case that an author decides to do so); any comment realized unrelated to the topic will be moved to the haloscan comment box.
Thank you.
PS. I will try to install a chat application on the H.blog too.
Sorry for using html in the comment box
the URL for the first "this" is:
http://chatango.com
and for the second "this" is:
http://www.movalog.com/archives/plugins/inlineeditor/mt-inlineeditor-10.php
Reza - great idea. Maybe we should have a note at the top of each box, e.g.
[1] Please try to keep your comments on topic on this thread. Free space available on adjacent thread for digressive remarks.
[2] Free discussion / random remarks / schizonummification thread
- or whatever
(Otherwise people will lose track of what this separation is for)
At the moment, both are just called 'comments' - should we give them distinctive names?
Posted by: nick at March 29, 2005 01:54 AMAlso, think concise on-topic nummifications should be 'permitted' on the 'disciplined' thread, with sprawling mommotoid free-associations gently nudged (at gunpoint) into chaos space
Posted by: nick at March 29, 2005 02:19 AMEsmail,
Thanks very much. In fact, i stole the chat idea (using chitango) from your Mahzood. Installing and using chitango is simple, that's makes it great but as i have noticed it doesn't have any chat-log. am i right? but i'll put chitango on the H.blog in any case.
re MT plug-in, i don't have access to MT directories. think Abe is too busy to do this.
Posted by: Reza at March 29, 2005 04:51 AMNick, check the other comment box for some answers.
>>> Also, think concise on-topic nummifications should be 'permitted' on the 'disciplined' thread, with sprawling mommotoid free-associations gently nudged (at gunpoint) into chaos space.
lol ... ok, but be aware that Tachi is watching you. ; but seriously, I think we need Tachi here to help us in saving the new goverment together with this free-for-all revolution and chaos. so i've invited him as well. yes, ''creative'' nummifications related to the topic fit the first thread as long as they don't proliferate. what do you think?
Posted by: Reza at March 29, 2005 04:59 AMReza - agreed. To repeat: "concise on-topic" - maybe we should set a numerical limit ;)
LOL. Actually Reza, I have been watching all along. Agree with Nick, the two boxes should have names, if possible. Something along the lines of "strategic engagement" and "diversionary tactics"? To follow Nick - "on-topic" and "chaos space" ... Seriously though, don't think its governmental to manage the flow, Reza. I think when any attempt at management is criticised for being transcendent and authoritarian, it does miss the point - its all a question of scale. Trying to manage the flux of inputs to stimulate greater connection and intensity, and weed out the banal, is itself part of a process that belongs to no agency whatsoever. Agency can be conceived as effectuating changes on this level, but is entirely irrelevant on the next.
Posted by: Tachi at March 29, 2005 07:16 AMTachi - seems to me current plans strike a good balance, hope you're also feeling basically encouraged
Posted by: nick at March 29, 2005 08:58 AMNick,
>>> Reza - agreed. To repeat: "concise on-topic" - maybe we should set a numerical limit ;)
OK :)
Tachi,
LOL ... the goverment hint was obv. a joke, you should get used to our sinister jokes Tachi. re comment boxes: i think there is no way to change their names with this limited access that we have to the blog's core, but the idea of putting links (with two different names) at the top of each post is practical.
btw, check your inbox.
Posted by: Reza at March 29, 2005 09:18 AMi think we can rename the haloscan comment box: now, which name do you vote for: piet pit, chaos space, schizonummification thread or ...?
Posted by: Reza at March 29, 2005 09:56 AMReza - no worries, get where you are coming from ... but still, I am aware that there might be some resistance to "management".
Nick - you make me laugh - first I ever heard you seeking to "strike the right balance"! Though of course I get you too.
Posted by: Tachi at March 29, 2005 05:46 PMReza - how about 'tangents', 'diversions', 'fluff' or 'chat' for the haloscan?
Posted by: Tachi at March 29, 2005 05:48 PMTachi,
>>> but still, I am aware that there might be some resistance to "management".
Don't worry, anything other than on-topic comments will be simply moved to the other comment box. plus, don't underestimate hyperstition's ninja-hackers and Cerberus elite for the time of unrest ;)

Nick + Tachi,
i used on-topic and tangents for now, but looking forward to more names. more suggestions please.
Posted by: Reza at March 30, 2005 05:33 AMWhat an excellent idea... though the rest of what I want to say belongs in 'tangents'
