The Iranian Ballistic Missile and WMD Threat to the United States Through 2015
www.nyu.edu/globalbeat/mideast/Walpole092100.html
By Robert D. Walpole, National Intelligence Officer for Strategic and Nuclear Programs, Statement for the Record to the International Security, Proliferation and Federal Services Subcommittee of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, September 21, 2000

Iran has very active missile and WMD development programs, and is seeking foreign missile, nuclear, chemical, and biological technologies. Iran's ballistic missile program is one of the largest in the Middle East ...... We judge that like many others, Iran views its regional concerns as one of the primary factors in tailoring its programs. Tehran sees its short- and medium-range missiles not only as deterrents but also as force-multiplying weapons of war, primarily with conventional weapons, but with options for delivering biological, chemical, and eventually nuclear weapons. On 15 July of this year, Iran conducted a second test of its Shahab-3. We assess that Iran's interest in eventually developing an ICBM/space launch capability has not changed.

what's the difference between "most likely" and "probably"? It may not seem like much, but in the precisely expressed National Intelligence Estimate — an occasional summary of the work of U.S. intelligence agencies — it can mean a lot. In 1999, the estimate said that the U.S. would "most likely" face a missile threat from North Korea, would "probably" face one from Iran, and would "possibly" face one from Iraq, all in the next 15 years. In March, CIA official Robert Walpole told Congress that Iran had caught up to North Korea and joined it in the "most likely" category — a quantum jump in Iran's potential threat to the U.S.

course they had to go bury the 'rock dust' and 'reinventing money' memes/ alternatives/ tension defusers under a great big formal pile of pretend reality ruled cross ref propriety [a] so outlandish as to be virtually uncontested, [b] keeping up appearances of all inclusive specificity to cloak the rigid rote and virtual rigor mortis of compliance with the ineluctable or inescapable whichever comes first.

Let's talk weapon development with a sense of no way out but through shall we? Puke, barf, etcera.

Piet,

Once again, this is the 'on-topic' thread ... had to move your last two comments to Tangents. By the way, I don’t want to blame your idea (which is a hurried reduction of this piece to extremity), but you have no idea of what’s going on in the Middle East (esp. Iran). This is also the problem of many Eurocentric bubble-intelectuals. Unfortunately, some writers here are under some obligations and open discussion is not wise.

The convergence of the 'big Abrahamic three' around the nexus of Iran and the importance of 'pushing' the US into the 'trap' which awaits it if it openly engages Iran in military terms has absolutely not been lost by those few working through the US's national security establishment who not only see the 'writing on the wall', but clearly are in a position to change the entire dynamic 'plans' of those who have been 'allowed' to steer US policy up until this point -- and allowed to present themselves publically and out in the open, I might add. This fact must not be lost. Most interesting, that those most closely 'associated' with US policy, two of the 'big three', work side by side toward achieving the same 'ends' -- with the 'last religion' firmly placed to fullfill its 'desertifcation' role vis-a-vis the so-called 'beast'. Yet, there are other forces at work, as the 'beast' isn't simply some 'animal' that can be 'tamed'.

Perhaps, it won't be too long before the 'wild card' is played and the big three, along with their followers and leaders, are swept aside by something they believe they can actually defeat -- only to devour themselves in the process -- as they are 'the thing' itself -- wearing a mask.

It's clear if one is paying attention to what's happening behind the scenes within the US national security establishment (and all other ns establishments that are 'targets') that 'exposure' is beginning to pick up steam. Ironically, the sights may not be on Iran -- but slightly West.
