Bruce Schneier, Applied Cryptography ("the book the National Security Agency never wanted published"- Wired), p1:
If you want to follow the ISO 7489-2 standard, use the terms "encipher" and "decipher." It seems that some cultures find the terms "encrypt" and "decrypt" offensive, as they refer to dead bodies.
Discuss.
Posted by undercurrent at December 23, 2004 03:52 PMDoes that mean 'cryptography' is out too?
Sort of weird the way the CIA and suchlike spooky types got allergic to dead bodies - some sort of 1990s holiday i guess ...

ISO 7489-2 is a GAS.

Cryptographic procedures are buried in the fourth strata. Agree to agree on your procedures, or "it will not be possible to communicate."
What one would need to communicate with such procedures is questionable.
The cipher/crypt controversy invests in the difference between an immanent vacancy and an uncertain occupancy. The cipher is always becoming nothing, zero, without meaning; but the crypt, as space of interment, can always be filled, waiting to be filled, or its contents exhumed.
What a silly topic.
Posted by: thistle at December 23, 2004 09:28 PMhehe, HELLO! thistle
i really like the greenbook, it should help bring things together (silly topic yes)
thistle - "What a silly topic" - you feeling a little grumpy or something?
Your ISO 7489-2 ref./quote totally hilarious

has this been sufficiently dealt with? (hoping)
Posted by: northanger at December 24, 2004 04:33 AMsorry for starting a silly topic (warned Reza he shouldn't grant me the heady corrupting power of login). I've been holding on to this gem for ages now, thought it was time to share it....
since yesterday the hyperhex genome has been hit by a sudden increase in density at 1 (overtaking the former dominance of 5 and 9).

[1] cannot add words to HEX.
[2] please, can we have a scrollbar when the wordlist gets to long.
[3] can we enter diacritics? like umlauts?
>[1] cannot add words to HEX.
I can...no problems...
>[2] please, can we have a scrollbar when the wordlist gets to long.
click into the glossary text and press the 'down' key ;)
>[3] can we enter diacritics? like umlauts?
from the pov of being a lazy b*stard, i think this would be over-elaboration with no discernable benefit...ASCII exists for a reason.
Posted by: undercurrent at December 24, 2004 01:51 PM>>> as usual, you programmers are sons of bitches.
sorree :O| (very cranky when this was written)
think diacritics should be brutally excluded in principle - ugh! horrible abdigital affectations
Posted by: nick at December 25, 2004 01:51 PMmy sister identified (hey, bring the entire family into it) a possible problem god could have: what does god do when two prayers cancel each other out? how does god ensure that all possibilities reach their correct conclusion?
When is a cigar just a cigar? When will HEX be changed to AQ on The Nummificator?
Posted by: northanger at December 25, 2004 08:12 PM"When will HEX be changed to AQ on The Nummificator?" - could we prioritize this question - Vauung.
